The pilot of a light plane has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after his aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Moorabbin Airport.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers believed the plane crashed into trees just after midday on Tuesday.A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesman said the crash happened near the intersection of Old Dandenong Road and Clarinda Road at Heatherton in Melbourne’s south-east.

The police spokeswoman said the pilot was the sole occupant of the aircraft, and he had been taken to hospital with serious injuries. She said police and emergency services were at the scene.An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman confirmed the man was taken to The Alfred hospital.
