India travel ban likened to Pontius Pilot 'washing his hands' of responsibility | Sky News AustraliaNationals Senator Matt Canavan has compared the Morrison government’s decision to impose a travel ban on India to Pontius Pilot who “washed his hands” of responsibility at the trial before the crucifixion of Jesus in the Bible. \n\nHis comments followed the Prime Minister’s decision to walk back threats to penalise Australians flying home after spending time in India within 14 days of their arrival.\n\nThere are nearly 650 Australians in India listed as vulnerable and 9,000 who are reportedly stranded as the country struggles to deal with skyrocketing cases and an overwhelmed health system.\n\nThe decision to impose a temporary ban on flights from India has triggered a chorus of criticism from crossbenchers and backbenchers in the Morrison government.\n\nMr Canavan said he was concerned the coronavirus had destroyed “not just our freedoms” but sometimes “our sense of humanity to each other”.\n\n“We sent planes to Wuhan to get Australians out and now 15 months down the track we are taking a leaf from Pontius Pilot and washing our hands of the circumstances of our fellow Australians.”\n mattjcan Matt Canavan going hard against Morrison government.
