ANALYSIS: Peter Gutwein's pandemic response won praise, but has the shine gone off?

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein has a good story to tell.

Earlier this year, according to The Examiner newspaper, he told a citizenship ceremony: "I am well placed to say that anything is possible." Mr Gutwein has tried to compare the hardship grants to school levy relief and money given to temporary visa holders. One business owner told The Examiner newspaper their grant [awarded at the lesser amount of $4,000] only came through after they complained about the process and aired their frustrations in the media.

But while boosting funding to mental health services such as Lifeline, the Government has not offered any specific support to the owners of small business, nor has it actually surveyed small business owners on how they're faring.

I've never taken Gutwein as a fool, yet here he is encouraging speculation and suspicion about a grants process.

Premiers: ‘know when to walk away’. It’s time to ditch your border controls. Now put the same energy into establishing foolproof contact tracing systems to deal with outbreaks as you’ve been putting into heavy handed policing.
