Peter Dutton has again compared the government responses to the 1996 Port Arthur massacre and pro-Palestinian protests outside the Sydney Opera House in October
Thirty-five people were killed and 23 others wounded in a mass shooting in Port Arthur, Tasmania in 1996, prompting then-prime minister John Howard to fundamentally reform Australia's gun laws. Speaking this morning, Mr Dutton repeated the comparison, saying that Mr Howard had been "strong as a leader, not weak", and led Australia on a path of gun reform that it still benefits from.
Mr Dutton refuted that he was making a direct comparison to the incidents themselves, saying that was an attempt by ABC journalists to "tarnish" him.
