The City of Perth cancels Skyworks 2021 amid COVID-19 concerns, with the state's Chief Health Officer saying the event would present too great a risk to the community.

Perth's Skyworks event which normally draws hundreds of thousands of people to the Swan River foreshore on Australia Day every year, has been cancelled for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.Perth's Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas says public safety must come firstThe decision comes as Western Australia softens its hard border, which was in place for more than 200 days.

Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said while the news would be disappointing for many, the event was always subject to the State Government's COVID-19 roadmap and the subsequent restrictions. "The advice from the Chief Health Officer is that proceeding with Skyworks in 2021 presents too great a risk to community safety," Mr Zempilas said.Basil Zempilas says the Skyworks 2021 event was always subject to health advice."We're disappointed there'll be no fireworks, but the City of Perth will still be the home of next year's Australia Day celebrations in WA," he said.
