Perese to start for Waratahs, Tupou benched for Reds in Super Rugby opener | tomdecent

Izaia Perese, described by NSW teammate Jack Maddocks as a “firecracker”, has been named at outside-centre for the Waratahs in his first outing against a Queensland Reds side that won’t feature suspended winger Suliasi Vunivalu.

Skipper Jake Gordon and Will Harrison continue their partnership in the halves, James Ramm and Alex Newsome are the side’s wingers, while Maddocks will wear the No.15 jersey in his 50th Super Rugby appearance. The big team news for the Reds is that Wallabies prop Taniela Tupou hasn’t been named in the starting side. Thorn said a long Wallabies campaign meant he decided to bring “Tongan Thor” off the bench.

“These things can happen,” Thorn said. “We’ve dealt with it. They’re not much fun making those decisions. “There was a bit of hype around him,” Maddocks said. “It would have brought a few extra set of eyes to the game. They’ve got a lot of depth up there. They won’t lose much but it was adding a bit to the occasion. Him being a winger and me being a fullback, we would have come across each other a fair bit.”
