As prices rise, there are warnings president could face another protest movement like gilets jaunes

, was loading discounted eggs, sugar and milk into her car. With prices rising, the 55-year-old couldn’t stretch to a full trolley and could rarely afford to drive to Guéret, her nearest town.

Worries about purchasing power and how to make ends meet have become French voters’ top concern before the April presidential election. Last week there was a national strike over wages and the blockade of fuel depots, with people in rural areas dependent on cars saying they were being hit hard. If Macron is re-elected next month – as polls suggest he will be – there are questions over whether he could face another form of social protest movement like thedemonstrations, which began over fuel taxes and living costs and morphed into a widespread anti-government revolt.

On walls near Lidl in Guéret, posters for the hard-left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who is rising in the polls, promised he would “block prices” for essential goods. Martin would vote for him. At a local fuel pump, Jean, 73, parked his Skoda. “Because pensions are so low I’ve got to keep working,” he said of his job in transport logistics. He voted for Macron in 2017 but won’t do so again. “We’re sleepwalking into a social crisis, salaries are low and people feel suffocated,” he said.Photograph: Julien Mattia/Le Pictorium/Zuma/Rex/Shutterstock

Getting left behind as the cost of living goes upInflation in Australia is officially 3.5 per cent, but the prices of many everyday items, especially petrol, are rising much faster, and this new era of higher inflation has only just begun. Lidia Thorpe is a race hustling grub. Why are her hands a different colour to her face? Sad to hear from a reasonably well paid professional. The rest of us just have to cop- it- sweet and squeeze our toothpaste tube a little harder. This looks to be the main issue for a while to come... giving out free money is always inflationary; pity no political party is interested in austerity or helping the poor, looks like government wants citizens who can to do it for themselves and cut their own 'rich' lifestyles.

How borrowing toys saved Melissa's family $5,000 in a yearWith more households under strain from the growing cost of living, families are turning to toy libraries to save money and cut down on waste. Who spends $5000 a year on toys? I can only hope this refers to the fact they borrowed approximately $5000 worth of toys. We have so many toys from frienrs, picked up off the street etc for a 1 yo and 3yo. Don't think we would have spent close to even $500 in 3 years and you can't walk without stepping on a toy I'm all for toy libraries, used them ourselves for our NDIS boys. But please, 'saved $5,000 a year' is just outright nonsense.
