Callum Good remembers sitting on the beach as a six-year-old, watching fighter jets fly over - from that moment, his future was clear | TheMattBungard

Callum Good remembers sitting at Stockton Beach in Newcastle as a six-year-old, watching fighter jets fly over. From that moment, he knew his future belonged in the sky - and the water.

There has been an increase in rescue missions on the NSW north coast in the last two years as swimmers get caught in heavy conditions at unpatrolled beaches around Coffs Harbour, some resulting in fatalities. He studied nursing after leaving high school and said that facing death at St Vincent's Hospital during his two-year stint there left him better prepared for the toughest aspect of any rescue-based career - not being able to save everyone.

Mr Good is running this year's The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac to help raise funds for the service.Mr Good said that the physical and mental aspects of the job are testing, both in training and in practice. "Australians get out there and push limits. We want to go where other people might not be able to go, and that's all good, that's the way life should be. But we're here to help those people."

UN condemns PNG massacre, calls for protection of human rightsThe UN has condemned violence in Papua New Guinea this week which saw 16 people, including pregnant women and children, slaughtered in tribal violence. Which elegantly illustrates just how effective the UN is these days. Tragic. Best send in Amal Clooney. Rest in peace beautiful people 3 Very tragic in PNG but what about the protection of human rights in many Middle Eastern countries, Central America, Africa, etc, etc.. on a far greater scale than PNG. Rarely hear much from the UN.
