The child abuse royal commission and its revelations about the extent of the Catholic Church's crimes against children formed the shock and grief stage of our response to this global tragedy. The conviction and sentencing of disgraced cardinal George Pell for child sex crimes has brought forth the anger.
Pell's victims knew that if they made allegations against him, they needed to face not only a cardinal but the whole powerful edifice of the establishment that stood behind him. That kind of power silences the wronged and entrenches privilege. His conviction resonates because the lie at the very heart of his power challenges community faith in the idea that when we cede power to the few, they will act in the public interest. He remained in power, in plain sight, and was promoted both within his church and in Australian society.
So will the the Two X LNP Prime Ministers Howard and Abbott's character references get Pell a even more lighter sentence?,Talk about Justice in Australia? It depends on who u are ,and who your friends are?.
General Population Pell, welcome to hell.
With respect the law is an ass. Pell is a bastard as a senior member of the Catholic Church. Since when does a jury and judge convict an individual based on the hearsay of one individual who claims to be a victim. Give us a break. Bring on the appeal. Ban the church.
He's a hero. This man who just kept going. It can't have been easy. To the victim who stood for his mate too. I say you have my belief and my respect
hanny_hawkins What was JC teachings. how u treat the poorest, weakest & least powerful in a society reflects how healthy that society is. we continue not to acknowledge our history, understand our scale in the universe, & shun death in our philosophy/society.
Hope Pell suffers in his own hell
If they did they would not be believed.
Alan Jones summed it up well.
There is no evidence no proof no witness’ only a kangaroo court with allegations & a sentence of a man because the world at large wants to bring down an institution. That’s what this is about. Not saying that all Catholic priests are innocent but why not punish those who are?
Its stitch up, in this particular case the so called victims are probably lying.
Pope on a rope, elf on a shelf, Pell in a cell.
Pell hung himself by not testifying and opening himself to cross examination. It may be his legal right not to participate, but it smells strongly of a man with something to hide! Shall we call it ‘Self Crucifixion’?
The Catholic Church is the largest pedophile ring in the world
Oh, in case your trying to influence the Appeal Judges, by your biased feminist propaganda, don’t bother, as Judges, unlike juries, are immune to media influence. Lawyers at that level are objective thinkers, interested in facts, not emotions.
Shame that you don’t reference the source of your quote that “millions of Australians believe”. No, because no such source exists, as much as you would like it to. You also omitted to mention the large numbers of people your colleagues report that support Pell. Biased journalism?
Let his God be the ultimate judge!
This is a most disgusting false article. Fact: the ‘other’ boy stated that he was not abused as a choir boy. Does his evidence not count?
MSMWatchdog2013 Here’s a question for Catholics. You’ve likely been asked before but I honestly don’t get it. How come your God allowed a Cardinal to rape young boys?
what an outlandish un corroborated story. Even the dead said it never happened, so sad and disappointed, Anyone can make a good story retrospectively using existing facts. That is the best type of lie.
MickKime Pell is a child abuser. The end.
davrosz Pell was like so many Catholic priests, safe behind his power, unassailable by vulnerable children who were his sexual targets. He became less safe, and praise is due to the investigators, the victims live and deceased, the investigative legal process and the fairness of the Law.
But still, John Howard does not believe...
But then only one was left to do the telling.
At least 3 years of 3 square meals per day and all the sex he can handle all paid for by the tax payers of Australia. How's that a bad deal really? Reap what you sow.
Your Sin no matter what time Period will always catch up with you.
It's about time the power shifted to the child victims rather than the adult perpetrators. Can you even begin to imagine the power differential between a child and a highly placed, well regarded, even 'revered' adult? What is 'consent'? How old is 'consent'? Save the children....
F*k these f*king f*ks!
I will wait for the appeal and see what 3 judges come up with. The first hearing was10/2 not guilty. His behavior doesn’t reflect in anyway the behavior of know pedophiles .
The Catholic Church, which systematically protected child abusers is evil. But so too are all the institutions that enabled this behaviour, including the media. Time to treat all churches as subject to Australian laws and not as 'above the law' as they have often believed.
And millions don't. Can't wait for him to vindicated on appeal - and for your retraction and apology.
'Police in Sydney and Melbourne had an “understanding ... for many years” about protecting church figures accused of child sex allegations, Justice McClellan said.'
'Anger and resentment by many Austs towards powerful institutions that have failed them – think governments, corporations, banks, bureaucracies – helps explain why people objected to John Howard and Tony Abbott speaking up for Pell after his conviction was finally made public.'
Make that a million and one. What a filthy GRUB
'He represents discussions behind closed doors, secret meetings, the dead hand of legal documents and confidentiality clauses, the denial of public accountability. And that way of doing things extends beyond the Catholic Church into too many elements of Australian life.'
'Now there's anger, but it's not just about Pell...But he is also a lightning rod for anger about powerful people abusing power, throwing their weight around, acting hypocritically, telling the rest of society what to do, and sticking together when things go wrong.'

news_australian Why did it take so long, the man is 78.
He got a slap on the wrist thanks to Murdoch and his minions
Joanne I wish you “a surreal moment”!
. They believe it despite one purported 'victim' repeatedly denying the alleged offence ever took place at all. Ever. But his parents 'think' it 'explains' the poor sod's drug addiction and subsequent suicide. Even the sentencing judge referred to this unseemly 'witch hunt'.
Please also let’s make sure that the Redress Scheme is fully operational so that the thousands of victims, who shared their painful personal stories with the Royal Commission, are better looked after before they, too, die. Pell still has a roof over his head. Some victims don’t.
