One passenger is in a serious condition and eleven others are in hospital after their plane suddenly dropped midair between Sydney and Auckland on Monday afternoon. About 50 people onboard flight LA800, operated by Chilean airline Latam , were treated for injuries ranging from minor to serious when they touched down in Auckland about 4pm local time. More than a dozen emergency vehicles responded, a spokesperson for St John ambulance said, and a total of 12 people were taken to hospital.
Ten patients were taken to Middlemore Hospital about 10 kilometres from the international airport, including one in a serious condition. Another patient was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a moderate condition, and one patient was taken to Starship Hospital in a moderate condition. The airline said in a statement the “strong movement” in the cabin was due to a “technical event”, but did not elaborate on the cause of the incident.Passengers said a number of people were not wearing seatbelts when flight LA800 suddenly dropped.“I used to be a flight attendant and this is the first time I’ve ever experienced anything like this,” one passenger told the New Zealand Herald. “It was terrifying.
