Parramatta River breaks its banks, flooding Powerhouse Museum site | smh_andrew

The Parramatta River has broken its banks, flooding the site of the new Powerhouse Museum in Parramatta’s CBD and inundating a ferry wharf.

Swollen by heavy rain, the banks were broken at the Charles Street weir and ferry wharf in Parramatta.Getty Images Images shared on social media showed water from the river flooding streets and bike paths, while a video posted by Parramatta Labor councillor Donna Davis depict the museum site inundated with floodwaters.

Cr Davis on Facebook said it was “old news” that the site on the river floods every time there is heavy rain.“That’s why we know this is not the best place for a squillion $ museum,” she said. “A Powerhouse Museum that has been redesigned to permanently close the ground floor ‘undercroft’ because it’s not safe from flooding – resulting in the loss of valuable community space.”

The Bureau of Meterology on Saturday morning issued flood warnings for the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Colo rivers, while emergency services have warned of dangerous road and surf conditions will remain dangerous and are advising motorists to stay home.

_andrew Known flood site over the years the old David Jones carpark where they have marked as site for the new museum plus knockdown of heritage building next door. Plus may lead to rethink on where to put amenities such as cycleway. Yes cyclists say we want the river view. 1/x

_andrew Great article, as a local I thank you for shining a light on this appalling planning decision by the NSW Govt. What they don't botch, they bulldoze e.g. Parramatta Pool. Perhaps Fate has been kind and the weather will change their mind. Not to the Hospital site!

_andrew Where’s Flannery?

_andrew Save tax payers money..... don’t build it

_andrew Amazing the Meriton Apartments next door have been built high enough not to flood so I would it very strange the museum would not be. The Lenox apartments are also on the river have been “flood preoofed”.

_andrew Sydney deserves this for being one of the world's worst emmissions transgressors.

_andrew Gladys was told that this could happen. 😠😠😠😠😠

bkbaguley _andrew At this rate it will end up back at its original site.Gladys you’re an ‘ideas’ girl.

_andrew Should be a very timely warning!

drkerrynphelps _andrew Maybe put a model of an old water wheel driven flour mill there instead?

_andrew Another bright idea from LiberalNSW

_andrew

_andrew I’m sure the developers don’t give a rats and are probably killing them selves laughing?

_andrew Don't move a museum to a flood zone!!!

_andrew Good one, GladysB

PetraAu _andrew Perhaps gladdy could put the maritime section there.

_andrew Well that was to be expected. I seem to recall there were some not insignificant issues in relation to that site. Well done Gladys.

_andrew gladysmustgo too many bad decisions in favour of lnp donors and nothing for the people. She can no longer be premier

AlexWodak _andrew Back to the old drawing board, Gladys

PetraAu _andrew Shock! Horror! How could this thing thst we warned would happen, happen?

_andrew It's a 1 in 100 year flood. I know what they look like because we had one last year too.

_andrew The gods have spoken.... GladysB

_andrew Put the Liberal party logo on this one too.

_andrew Is there anything the LNP can't make a mess of?

_andrew GladysB

_andrew Because the new Powerhouse is being built on top of the Parramatta Weir.

_andrew

_andrew

JoJomills13 _andrew It’s looking for politicians houses to wash them out...

_andrew For those that don't understand that flooding is allowed for.

_andrew Might be an idea to leave all the good exhibits in the city.

drkerrynphelps _andrew Well aren't we all glad our unique, precious and irreplaceable museum pieces aren't currently being washed down a Parramatta drain right now. Hey Gladys, you may have lost developer $ but we the people still have our artefacts. Gladys you might want to join the far queue.

_andrew Theres a half empty office building in Hornsby right near the office and Hornsby could use a tourist attraction

_andrew Not quite sure how our systems for dams work? If a dam is nearly at full capacity and the forecasters are forecasting x mm of rain is going to fall, why not release more water earlier in anticipation of the rain levers? Why wait for everything to flood?

RandaltsRandal _andrew Such a great idea to put the Museum there GladysB

_andrew So is anyone actually surprised this happened sooner not later? Thankfully before the museum was finished and artifacts moved in !

_andrew Gladys we told you so !

_andrew Attention GladysB !! Please reconsider this ill considered and ill fated plan!

_andrew 😢

greensinspa _andrew GladysB So tell everyone again why it’s a good idea to move the Powerhouse museum here? I’ll wait 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️

drkerrynphelps _andrew I wonder if Daryl has a mate with a Super Sopper?

_andrew Has anyone owned up yet to the idea of putting a museum there.

_andrew Praise God nothing precious had been moved there!!!!! GladysB

_andrew As Expected 🤷🏻‍♂️ GladysB

_andrew ha ha ha glorious
