An alcohol ban will not solve all the toxic cultural problems at Parliament House. But it should be part of any reform to create a safer workplace. | OPINION auspol

Removing alcohol from Parliament won’t solve its toxic culture, but it should be part of the approach.

Policies that target alcohol use alone will not single-handedly fix the issue. But they are an important part of the many actions needed to address the unsafe workplace that exists. Too often, alcohol is used to excuse violence, which should never be the case. Alcohol use can also increase the severity and frequency of violence against women, including sexual violence. A drinking culture is not the whole picture, but it is part of it.The Work Health and Safety Act provides that employers have a duty of care to provide a safe workplace for their employees. Many workplaces have alcohol policies for this reason.

Their behaviour in parliament is likened to a school playground but worse. They heckle, don’t allow the others to speak, sleep and so on when the tax payers are paying their wages. Not good enough!

What kind of responsible workplace allows alcohol? Sorry forgot - a bunch of irresponsible 'school boys' leading the country. Yes, I have lost my respect for them a long time ago.

Toxic culture start from the top

Want to end toxicity in Parliament? Ban the Greens and Labor.

Not just in PH, but all work functions even outside of PH.

Why don’t we also stop paying them too? Just make it a place for “volunteer billionaires” to use our parliament purely to stoke their own egos and further their corporate interests too? 🤦‍♂️

Sounds like Canberra🇦🇺is a always pickled 😂 'The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet says that employees “limit their consumption of alcohol to a level where the alcohol does not impede or adversely affect their safety (or the safety of others), capacity or behaviour”.'

I think a few people with drinking and assault problems are tweeting below (way down below)⬇️ Not exactly rape apologists -- and not unhinged -- just drunk and clumsily typed tweets that go sideways.

Bro.......if you are going to advocate for the imposition sharia law, then women's toxic overt sexual signalling will also need to be banned with compulsory Buqua`s

I think we need to ban makeup and high heels too. We want to see women as they really are! No fancy wrappings, just standard brown paper!

Another commentatorvunable to move beyond the now cliched 'toxic culture' nomenclature. Very tedious and by grasping this overworn term indicates a lack of perception

Put them on indue cards.

The prayer room lives on. And a man just can't get enough prayer.

It's not going to solve every problem, sure, but it's pretty much the least they could do.

Other drugs easily available and easier to hide.

It seems that on top of them having a drinking problem there all a pack of wankers too....

The problem with alcohol consumption at Parliament House is decades old. That should give you a clue as to how many women have been harrassed, assaulted and raped undet its roof. Challenge: find a young attractive woman that hasn't been assaulted at a Parliament House function.

Absolutely. What other workplaces allow people to be intoxicated on the job these days?
