Sydney councils have collected more than $650 million from parking fines over the last four years

, supporting state government claims some are using the ticketing of motorists as a "cash cow".

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has been pressuring councils since last year to lower parking fines after the governmentto give them greater flexibility. While the government sets the level of parking fines, the vast majority of tickets are issued by local councils. Acting Treasurer Damien Tudehope said it was disappointing only a small number of councils had decided to cut parking fines.

Motoring group NRMA said it was telling that "so few councils" had adopted lower fines under the government scheme, particularly the wealthier ones.

In Cronulla you are fined if you park your car the wrong way round in a parking spot in a car park!? Front in or back in - why does it matter? And to who?

Does that not say that there simply is not enough parking ? The money earned from fines should be reinvested into multi story car parks operated by council!
