Some parents were frustrated to learn staff at Baldivis Secondary College decided not to evacuate students, despite authorities releasing an alert to say they were in danger.
Year Ten student Gabrielle Mills went to hospital suffering suspected smoke inhalation later that day and her parents said she should have been evacuated.At the peak of the blaze, the high school on Stillwater Drive was thrown directly into the red zone. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued an emergency warning just after 11am, saying the fire was burning out of control and posed a threat to lives, encouraging members of the public to evacuate immediately.
On Friday, the Education Department stood by the college’s decision to keep students inside, saying they were in constant contact with fire authorities and that the correct procedures were followed.
