ANALYSIS: Our healthcare system has received a grim diagnosis. Can the government come up with a cure?

Butler will be appealing for all to accept the system is in crisis and in need of change. His reforms will be based on the recommendations of his Strengthening Medicare Taskforce, which deliberately brought in a range of voices, from GPs to nurses and allied professionals, to come up with solutions.. The premiers, facing growing pressure on their hospitals, are up for reform, particularly if it involves the Commonwealth spending more.

Given the well-documented pressures building on the budget, the Albanese Government doesn't have much fiscal room to move. It will be trying to squeeze more out of existing health dollars through its "liberating" and "modernising" of Medicare. It's a worthy ambition, but most experts agree the system really needs significant extra funding to keep over-stretched staff on board, attract new recruits and deliver the level of care most Australians expect.

The Albanese government has taken on some difficult challenges for 2023. Fixing Medicare is right up there. David Speers is the host of Insiders, which airs on ABC TV at 9am on Sunday or on iview, and host of the Back to You Podcast, out Fridays.

Tax the Corporations . Make them Pay Tax

I doubt Labor will fix anything, more likely to make the situation worse.

Look we need a wimdfall profits tax and an abandonment of the stage 3 tax cuts or we should stop so much of the health budget being spent on people who will be dead in a year.

You are surely joking. Liebor can't even manage themselves let alone the Health system. Look at NDIS, BS wants to means test that now. How does his idol JG feel about that

No, LobbyGroups will nibble any reform efforts Medicare auspol

Yes, our health system suddenly crumbled but only when Albo took power. It had nothing to do with the last 10 years of Liberal inaction. Or the fact NSW is probably one of the worst with nurses and doctors fleeing to other states not with Liberals in power.

If only we didn’t have that last incompetent government who bungled up the submarines and forked out so many billions & we ended up with nothing to show for it..

This socialist government is the disease not the cure!

Stop the referendum fire 20% of politicians Stop giving money to pharmaceutical, climate change, companies Give the money to hospitals, schools and roads. Easy fix

Govt is handicapped cos the coalition doubled the debt before covid ; on what ?

A few thousand more bureaucrats ought to fix it.

Know someone at this minute waiting in an emergency room. Waiting a long time. It's an LNP issue as they are in government. Studia fetish be gone next election!

‘We need more communism.’

Vaccination is in order for the medicare.

Its Labor leading the country, are you joking ?!

You should know this by now.. our health department does not deal with cures.. it only patches problems..

Forget Albo as part of the consultation.......now move the Health Minister on as well! Weak leaders generally surround themselves with weak Managers they avoid exposure!!

Well, I know they will give it a lot of thought and make it much better than it has been for many years. Morrison chopping it to bits never helped.

If anyone was ever in any doubt that the LNP was slowly killing Medicare you now have the evidence in front of you. That's what you get when you vote for the LNP.

Let's hope the solution is not years away. Better to do something NOW than nothing until later, to alleviate the catastrophic position health care is in today

Medicare is an Employment system for Woman. Woman are predominately employed in ' Caring Industries ' so we are robbing men to fund womans jobs. I bet when all this implodes, woman will be broke and searching for husbands again. They'll want mens money.

Nope. Medicare is buggered. Your just delaying the inevidable.

More BIG Labor-Green Taxes & funding into chronically insatiable & unproductive services......Health, NDIS, etc! Tipping points? Sounds like more broken election promises coming? Just BIGGER Woke Gov & smaller take home kids future salaries! David_Speers

Short answer, no.

Well stop propping up a failed a failed private health industry with tax payers money to the tune of 30% for starters

Stunning and brave

Until there is an open public inquiry and frank and open discussion as to the limitations on Medicare. No they can’t.

This government is out of their depth; there is money, but it’s wasted by an oversized governance and bureaucracy, NDIS rorts, renewables boondoggles, etc.

having 8 health departments for 26 million people is just a job creation programme...........its supposed to be an NHS

Step 1: Get those who farked it to fix it. Maybe you want to fix step 1 first.

Ahh with that clown in charge, no .

Morrison 2020-21 Medicare highest rate of bulk-billing this country has ever known. Albo 2023 Medicare Bulkbilling drops down to 83% Doctors say it’s a lack of Govt funding.

Businesses starting to have ‘second thoughts’ about AlbaneseThere are probably some in the business community that are experiencing “a few pangs of buyer's remorse” when it comes to backing in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, according to Sky News host James Morrow. “Remember that in the run-up to last year's election, it was no secret that the nation's C-suites were, at least quietly, hoping in many cases for the end of Scott Morrison and big gains to be made by the teals and Labor,” Mr Morrow said. “Now, though, as Anthony Albanese reveals himself as a Whitlam in Hawke's clothing, businesses are starting to have second thoughts.” Which ones? Gas companies? Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
