While countries such as the UK have reduced their quarantine requirements in recent days, Australian states have started to reimpose travel restrictions amid the Northern Beaches cluster. But why has 14 days been set as the mandatory minimum isolation period?

"We've seen numerous occasions of that — people spreading the infection in hospitals where people have had no symptoms and yet have been able to spread the virus to other people," Professor Cruickshank said.

The UK's so-called "test to release" scheme has also come into effect, allowing international travellers to pay for a private test after five full days, which, if negative, could see them released 24 to 48 hours later. "Any quarantine shorter than 14 days balances reduced burden against a small possibility of increasing the spread of the virus," it said.Despite the current outbreak, community transmission of COVID–19 has been well controlled in Australia so far.

"As more people come back to Australia from overseas, the risk is going to become higher that we are likely to see some outbreaks, so we still need to have the quarantine," Professor Cruickshank said."There could be some circumstances where people could be tested and retested while they're in isolation and the period could be shortened.Buses line up at the Ibis Hotel in Darling Harbour to let passengers off to enter 14 days' quarantine.

Sadly, as testing processes become faster and more accurate, hotel quarantine becomes less about managing health outcomes and more about political theatre (good vision of o/s visitors hustled onto buses by cops) and creating a 'disincentive' for people to arrive in Australia.

To help hotels of course, boost the economy, give jobs. Hong Kong changed bracelets to hotel quarentine.
