Federal Minister for Communications and the Arts Paul Fletcher, 56, met his wife, jewellery designer Manuela Zappacosta, 53, while sharing a house during university. But it wasn’t until years, miles and continents later that love bloomed.
I’d been toying with coming home to Australia and a shooting at a North Hollywood preschool solidified it. We’d catch up from time to time. It was around 2000 that I happened to go through LA, where Manuela was living. Her marriage had broken down. I was going back and forth to the US for months. We were securing regulatory approvals for Optus being acquired by Singtel and part of that included the Optus satellites which contained US military technology. I’d stop off and stay with Manuela for a day or two, sometimes a bit longer.During that period we got together.
One of the important challenges was not mixing up the mailing lists of the people who had a vote in the preselection and those who were coming to our wedding!Our wedding overlapped with me contesting the Cook preselection, which was an intense process. [Fletcher contested Cook unsuccessfully before winning the seat of Bradfield two years later.
