One in five doctors and nurses has limited and in some cases no access to face masks, raising serious safety concerns as the number of health workers infected with COVID-19 continues to climb.
One respondent said they had been chastised by their manager for requesting PPE. "I am in an unsafe working environment and feel unsupported and vulnerable," the doctor said. The Royal Australasian College of Physicians said access to protective equipment for all health workers needed to be assured and the use of higher grade N95 masks needed to be imposed in aged-care facilities.
More than one in five staff from public and private hospitals, community health and aged care said there was not enough protective equipment available.
