One in eight Australians adults and one in six children are living in poverty, a new report has found.

The Australian Council of Social Service and UNSW Sydney joint study found 13.6 per cent of the population - or 3.24 million people - are estimated to be living below the poverty line, after taking account of housing costs. The council's chief executive Cassandra Goldie said Australians were locked into poverty by low welfare rates, a lack of jobs and unaffordable housing.

"Our economy is leaving people behind, with persistently high poverty rates despite decades of uninterrupted economic growth," Dr Goldie said.Researchers warned Australia's poverty rate was worse than most wealthy countries, including New Zealand, Germany and Ireland. Eight in 10 Newstart recipients skipped meals and more than half had less than $15 after housing costs, it said.880,000 living in poverty in 'wealthiest state in one of the world's wealthiest countries'"Housing costs are rising faster than incomes, especially for low-income earners, pushing thousands of Australians into rental stress and homelessness," he said.

And still nobody will address the elephant in the room: mass immigration.

Ah from where to start... -rich ppl find loopholes and don't pay a cent in taxes - Midclass/Poor ppl get to pay taxes, give half of their wage for rent, then all the bills that keep going up, then food prices that keep going up due to droughts and Bushfires...

yes but we measure the state of the economy by the stock market and the share prices and how well the millionaire's are doing and how profitable the big companies are.

But Canberra Politicians say ..We are a wealthy economy..Don’t know why.. as long their pay scale is increasing ..which is sad Start focusing on Australians not overseas donations.. to many many countries .. who are pocketing every $ 😡

I guess Bob Hawke's estimate and costings were wrong after all labordreaming 🙄🙄

1 in 8 adults and 1 in 6 children live in poverty. Why are we giving billions to the corrupt UN again

But we have billions to donate to the UN, and foreign nations that literally hate us. And SBS is complicit in ripping off Australian people with their leftist, brainless reporting

SBS Shameful!

But they also say the average income in Oz is around 80k? Which means some people are really rich

DV threw us into poverty. I recently wrote a song as an open letter to Scott Morrison about it. scomowhatwouldjesusdo

we'll then, aren't you glad the PM just announced 1.1billion in military spending? at least we have a strong military.

And our governments are doing zero to change the situation. It’s a national crisis with solutions but no. That would require work and negotiation instead of self promoting media releases

Australia extends China travel ban for one more weekAustralia has extended its travel ban on tourists and students travelling from China for another week. Need to make it permanent, and expand it to every non-European country. I don’t like the LNP but this is right. And then what? It needs to be indefinite, at least until contained. Why do all this just to stuff everything up in a few weeks? Nonsensical otherwise.

More than 50 people died under Victoria's assisted dying scheme during its first six monthsDozens of people have died under Victoria's assisted dying scheme in its first six months, with a review board finding no evidence that any of them were coerced. Readers seeking support and information about suicide can contact Lifeline 24 hours a day online and on 13 11 14. Other services include the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467, Beyond Blue and Kids Helpline (for people aged five to 25) on 1800 55 1800. The sky has not fallen in, Chicken Little (aka SBS). Breathless 'dozens' implies it's a large number. It's about 1 in 500 deaths in Victoria (2.5 times as many people (125) are killed on Victoria's roads each 6 months ( This news encourages me greatly. Over 50 individuals in Victoria have been able to die without pain, in dignity and plan their goodbyes. I hope Tasmania follows because I should not have to move interstate to access a basic human right.
