The rate of Australian children receiving protection services is on the increase, according to a new report. 2600SkyNews

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has found one in 35 children received protective services in 2017-18, equating to around 158,600 boys and girls.AIHW’s Head of Child Welfare David Braddock has told Sky News 2600 some children are more likely to find themselves in need of protection services.

Mr Braddock has also confirmed Indigenous children are “also six times more likely to be the subject of a substantiation” – a circumstance where authorities conclude there is sufficient reason to believe a child has been, is being or is likely to be abused, neglected or otherwise harmed. “The efforts to date have proved completely inadequate to achieve substantial change for our children. For decades we have been forced to watch as more and more money is wastefully invested where we know it will have minimal impacts. We know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations are best placed to design and deliver necessitated local responses, yet support for these organisations is often fleeting.
