Sprinter Abdoulie Asim, who competed for The Gambia at the Commonwealth Games, wants to represent his adopted homeland of Australia, having faced many hardships before and after seeking asylum in 2018.

Given the many hardships Abdoulie Asim has endured before and after seeking asylum in 2018, being denied a gold medal at the Australian track and field championships ranks way down the list.Asim refused to return to The Gambia following the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast

The turning point came when he linked up with highly respected coach John Quinn, whose squad includes women's national 400 metres champion Bendere Oboya. Asim's dream is to represent his adopted homeland of Australia at the Olympics but he is yet to secure a passport.

No one should live under a bridge in this country! It is absolutely outrageous. What if you can't run fast! We need to scoop these people up or we are forever (maybe we are too late!) diminished as a people and a country.

The vast majority of refugees make their way to Australia dreaming of a better way of life. It's heartwarming to see one of them excel beyond OUR wildest dreams. Awesome.
