As a rising number of younger Australians find themselves trapped in the basements of their Boomer parents’ homes, a surprising number have taken to filming themselves miming to the words “OK Boomer” | Jess_Irvine

Having come of age during the second wave of the feminist revolution, female Baby Boomers were the first generation of women in history expected to work for a significant proportion of their lives. But, as they formed their beachhead into the workplace, they encountered a thick wall of sexual harassment, discrimination, pay and superannuation inequity.

For Boomer women whose dreams of a home, two kids and a dog disintegrated into divorce, many now face a homelessness crisis that has been dubbed the “sleeping giant” of social issues.Indeed, for all their wealth on paper, Baby Boomer cash flow is tight, says Richardson: “Newstart is a disaster. But that’s not the same as saying the pension is generous on international benchmarks – it isn’t.”

But according to economist Brendan Coates of think tank the Grattan Institute, many Boomer gripes are overstated. “I’m trying to remember the arguments,” says Coates, who at age 35 has been entangled in many media debates and forced to defend his Millennial cohort. “One is that we have got super, and they didn’t - which all depends on who pays it.” Superannuation, he says, has been deducted from Millennial pay packets, not delivered as manna from bosses.

Overall, Coates says the Boomer characterisation of Millennials as entitled gad-abouts, wasting their hard-earned on avocado and fashion, is a misnomer. Indeed, analysis of discretionary spending for the Grattan Institute's “Generation Gap” report reveals 15- to 24-year-olds today spend less on items such as clothing, alcohol and recreation than 15 -to 24-year-old in 1988 did.

Jess_Irvine They don't like boomers but need them to survive because they can't do it alone

Jess_Irvine Basements? Shows how derivative and shallow your reporting is on this topic

Jess_Irvine Ok I’m not a millennial but hear me out. Maybe, just maybe, that’s because boomers bought houses when they were affordable.

Jess_Irvine Bruh you have a major article on Grill'd taking advantage of young employees. There is no need to defend boomers, they have made their bed and now they have to lie in it

Jess_Irvine There is no defence

Jess_Irvine Basements?

Jess_Irvine More people mad about the use of the term “basement” than any of the sentiment 😂

Jess_Irvine How are they 'trapped'? I left home at 16 and never went back. My kids left, then came back, then left for good. And they're millennials, all four of them. Why this media beat up? Is it the job of the Fourth Estate to foment conflict between generations? FFS do your job.

Jess_Irvine It's funny cause those same millennials are doing it in their Boomer parents house and hoping for their inheritance share once they pass on.

Jess_Irvine A real Aussie ‘Boomer’

Jess_Irvine Oh come on how many people in Australia even have a basement

Jess_Irvine Ok boomer.

Jess_Irvine If only as much effort was put into applying themselves in their chosen careers.

Jess_Irvine OK BOOMER!!!

Jess_Irvine I didn’t realise so many Australian homes had basements!

Jess_Irvine As a Gen X myself what I see in the workplace and across my broader family are Gens who have an expectation....”my parents will provide it”, “Ive been in my job 3 months so when do I get a promotion”. Times change but respect, hard work and commitment to get what you want haven’t

Jess_Irvine I see why climate change isn’t an issue! We aren’t leaving it to anyone special!

Jess_Irvine How many Australian homes have been built with basements/cellars, beyond old limestone Adelaide houses?

Jess_Irvine Didn't realise Australian homes had basements, or attics. Millennials still at parents' homes are living in their childhood rooms and the rest of the house. Often rent free!

Jess_Irvine Jesus Christ I've raised two kids that don't lived in an fn basement... they work are successful and take responsibility 🙄

Jess_Irvine LOL “basements”

Jess_Irvine Why does this generation find everything so hard? Every gen before them worked hard, made sacrifices to get ahead. I suppose I don’t care about their whinging and lack of work ethic... just means they’ll never be a threat to me. So, ok Doomer.

Jess_Irvine I love knowing these worthless millennials are paying off my investment properties. Might be time to increase the rent😂

Jess_Irvine Just another sordid chapter in the divisive tome that is identity politics.

Jess_Irvine How many Australian homes have basements? A very American concept

Jess_Irvine Ok boomer, the N word of ageism, a bigotry. The kind of thing those with no real points behind their point of view, just a throwaway line to hide behind.

Jess_Irvine How about millennials stop going for lattes and holidays overseas, buying new cars and the latest phones computers. Work hard live within your means save some money

Jess_Irvine Boomers didn't tend to get trapped in their parents' homes for anywhere near as long as the new crowd

Jess_Irvine So another pointless exercise by a pointless generation 😂😂😂

Jess_Irvine Less ego, sacrifice and hard work is the equation......it’s not rocket science.

Jess_Irvine We Boomers were the trail blazers for the generations who have come after us. Pity they have stuffed it up. Also, at least we can spell , add up and carry on a well articulated conversation/ argument. We don't scream, threaten, bully or talk our opponents down.

Jess_Irvine They are desperate to find a purpose and fill in the emptiness in their lives, but do not understand where the emptiness is coming from.

Chinese fishing boats suspected of increasingly common laser attacksHand-held lasers are increasingly being used against Australian Defence Force assets, with military insiders blaming small Chinese maritime militia vessels for the dangerous tactic. looks like another war is slowly brewing with China.. internationally this time... Chinese boats suspected of increasingly common laser attack.🥺😫😖🇨🇳 So some guy on a rocking boat uses a handheld laser pointer to target the crew section of a rapidly moving helicopter and is successful? That could happen but it would be a complete fluke given all the random motion vectors in the kinematics involved. However there are solutions.

Australian soldier sentenced to 60 days for groping female colleagueA soldier who groped a female colleague will spend time in military detention after a trial that gives insight into how the Defence Force justice system works. Good. Military needs to make an example of poor behaviour and stamp it out. Integrity of military is paramount. Good he's been sentenced. But what kind of high jinks do judges get up to? I hope he comes out of the end of the process fully appreciating that if he can't stay in control while drinking then perhaps he should not drink at all. 🍻=🐒
