History of nurses uniforms reflect growing equality, focus on patient care

Recognition, on International Nurses Day, that uniforms have shifted from impractical stockings and petticoats to genderless scrubs, emphasising teamwork for the patient.Scrubs are now the norm for nurse uniforms placing staff on an equal playing fieldWhen Amanda Carter started as a registered nurse in 1982, she was proud of the uniform she wore although, from a comfort and practicality point of view, it left plenty to be desired.

She said the new uniform in use for more than a decade now, reflected the modern emphasis on a patient-focussed medical team. "Trousers are definitely more functional and much more practical in a clinical environment," Ms Carter said. Some theatre staff, like Renee Placek, prefer to wear a dress to work even though pants are available.

"I had a graduation badge, then a badge to work in Queensland, there were NSW badges, and then you'd have a badge for intensive care nursing," Ms Wilson said.

Omg those ice cream containers we had to wear on our heads in the 1980s!

Local controls were so extreme that in the same year in different hospitals I wore a starched dress with shank buttons(which constantly ripped your stockings) with apron and cute/troublesome cap (British influenced Matron) and a wash and wear zipped dress (American trained DON).
