NSW is on track to have 80 per cent of the adult population vaccinated with one dose by mid-September which will make a difference to the speed at which COVID can spread, an expert says.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Thursday said life would "look much rosier" after vaccination rates increased in the state as she announced a pandemic record 681 new cases. Kristine Macartney, director of the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance, said one dose reduced the chance of being infected with COVID-19 by 33 per cent.Professor Macartney said the evidence also suggested the chance of passing COVID-19 on was reduced by half if you are vaccinated.She said that strategies like spacing out the second dose of Pfizer vaccine from three to six weeks was "incredibly sensible" when vaccine supply was short.
"You have more people who have that transmission-blocking first , you add them all up, and then your ability to actually help stop the spread of the virus in the community is just that much better," she said.
80% is not enough and we are unlikely to get much past 70% given the experience of other countries where they are tipping vaccines down the sink. If you count the highly susceptible kids 80% comes down to 64% and a collapse of the hospital system.

People have been so conditioned to be scared by case numbers that they can’t see that sooner or later we will open up and treat it as endemic. It’s going to take a while but hopefully they come round to rational thinking.
