Volunteer firefighters in New South Wales will be eligible for up to $6,000 dollars in compensation, as part of a federal government scheme.

The move is designed to support crews through an 'unusually demanding' season, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison said it should not set a precedent for permanent payments. Mr Morrison stressed the payments would be provided as compensation to those who are self-employed or work in small to medium businesses who have lost income as a result of fighting the fires.

The volunteer NSW firefighters would also have had to have spent at least ten days battling blazes in the state. Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese criticised Mr Morrison on Sunday for negotiating a deal with NSW and leaving volunteers from other states who have travelled to assist with the firefighting effort in the lurch. The Prime Minister insisted if other state Premiers took up the deal, volunteers would be compensated for time spent in NSW.
