NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says the border between Victoria and NSW could open within a month if case numbers in Victoria remain low.
She pointed to Melbourne's new 25-kilometre movement bubble as a good test of Victoria's contact tracing capacity under looser restrictions, raising hopes the border – shut since July 6 – could open to all Victorians as soon as early November."We are very keen to see what happens in Victoria once further restrictions are eased because that's the real test," the NSW Premier said on Monday.
Victorian Tourism Industry Council chief executive Felicia Mariani on Monday pleaded for an indication on the date or criteria for relaxing those restrictions, warning tourism operators had already received millions of dollars in valuable bookings from Melburnians for the Melbourne Cup long weekend. "So many businesses had a much depleted Christmas season last year because of bushfires and the numbers that won't survive if this summer doesn't get up and running will be remarkable. That's where the industry is at right now - on tenterhooks."
Tasmania on Monday announced it would reopen to travellers from NSW on November 2, but remain shut to Victorians until December.
Covid19NSW michaelfowler08 Not sure about unrestricted Sydney though....
michaelfowler08 Numbers increased out of control when people were allowed into the country with the virus from overseas. It will never be eradicated while infected people keep entering the country.
michaelfowler08 It sounds like a sensible agreement, based on a mutual respect for one another’s health policies. Here’s hoping neither of you are swayed by federal skullduggery..I want to see my 3 kids currently in Melbourne lockdown,I don’t have long for this world ..It wld mean a lot to me thx
michaelfowler08 how are the New Zealanders who are in Victoria going to fly back to NZ when borders r closed & no flights to NZ from Melbourne?
michaelfowler08 hope so!!! 😀😀😀😀
michaelfowler08 Keep your pants on Gladys!
