NSW Transport Minister David Elliott has decided not to nominate for the federal seat of Parramatta but says he will play a major role in the election campaign to help the Liberals win.
However, Mr Elliott confirmed that he had decided against it. Mr Elliott’s wife Nicole has had breast cancer, and he has told colleagues he does not want to commute to Canberra. Mr Elliott’s seat of Baulkham Hills is being abolished, and he would face a bitter preselection battle if he wanted to stay in state politics, so is expected to retire at the March poll. His factional colleague Ray Williams has the branch support to be preselected for the new seat of Kellyville, while former Young Liberals president Noel McCoy is being touted as the candidate for Mr Williams’ seat of Castle Hill.
Mr Morrison will also make a captain’s pick for the seat of Eden Monaro, as well as other seats including Warringah, Greenway and Hughes and several Labor-held seats. The intervention also means that Holsworthy MP Melanie Gibbons will be denied a chance to contest her preselection for Hughes. Preselections were to be held on Thursday.
