The long-delayed National Skills Agreement has been kicked down the road again, but this time an end is in sight.

NSW is expected to lay claim to about a third of the federal government’s 180,000 free TAFE places after skills ministers signed a one-year funding deal to act as a stopgap while the final details of a longer-termBrendan O’Connor has ushered in a new era of collaboration with his state and territory counterparts.NSW skills minister Alister Henskens said his state would receive the most places based on a formula that took in current TAFE enrolments and population.

The distribution of the $1.1 billion in free TAFE places announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during the Jobs and Skills Summit is based on funding, not actual places., arguing such policies do nothing to increase the quality of education, artificially prop up TAFE and fail to provide community-wide benefits.“Every time we offer free courses, we get an uptick in enrolments,” he said.
