NSW cases of the highly transmissible coronavirus variant have doubled within a week but Health Minister Brad Hazzard is confident the state's current quarantine system can handle the more contagious strain | marywardy

As hundreds of people were recalled into isolation in Brisbane amid evidence the B117 coronavirus variant had been circulating among those held at the city's Grand Chancellor Hotel, NSW Health's Dr Jeremy McAnulty said there had now been 13 cases of the variant, often called the "UK strain" due to its country of origin, in returned overseas travellers in Sydney.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard says he has confidence in NSW's hotel quarantine system, as more variant cases emerge. The state's hotel quarantine system has also seen five patients with the B1351 coronavirus variant, which was first detected in South Africa and is also believed to be more highly transmissible than previous coronavirus variants. Four of these patients remain in Special Health Accommodation.

Under the public health order, household gatherings are currently capped at five visitors. Outdoor gatherings in a public place are capped at 30 attendees.

marywardy Yet NSW Health Minister Hazard is NOT so confident in ever finding patient zero and the original source of the outbreak. WHY ? This outbreak spread out of Sydney and to other Covid free States, and continues to pose a ‘great level of concern’ to himself, the Premier and the CHO.

marywardy The next outbreak will be the death knell for local businesses so he better be f**king right.

marywardy What about Q Station There is a reason they used islands to isolate the sick.

marywardy How would they know if their quarantine system is ok when they still don't know how it escaped to start the Avalon cluster.

marywardy BradHazzard is a dope. He believes it is better to mop up Covid cases with contact tracing rather than prevention of infections escaping from international travellers and air crews. Living with the virus is Covid normal for him. Prevention is better than cure.

marywardy Clamping a Richmond for two weeks sounds nice!

marywardy The entitled Hazzard should have been sacked after the Ruby princess debacle

marywardy '... if we understood the extent of aerosol transmission of viruses, this could have profound impacts for how we manage the Coronavirus, as well as help us to prepare for future pandemic' - auspol covid19au

marywardy Keep the plague out of the cities, remote quarantine. This isn't quantal physics.

marywardy Hey, Gladys says children under 12 can't catch it. Wtf are you talking about?

marywardy

marywardy nswhealth & nswstategoverment any chance we can get some sensible decisions and actual leadership while gladys scottyfrommarketing are out of town? NSW residents deserve to live too.

marywardy Too bad he's not the sharpest tool in the shed!

marywardy All kept very quiet. B.1.1.7 has been around in NSW quarantine since 30 Nov. and we were only told about it very recently - after Qld and WA forced their hand.
