Escalating tensions by lighting Sydney Opera House in Israeli flag colours wasn’t ‘significant cause for alarm’, NSW police minister says

A Sydney protest that gained international attention after itNSW police minister Yasmin Catley was on Tuesday accused of being in a “hazy daydream” about the events leading up toBut she defended her decision-making around the protest, saying the public should be thankful it did not escalate into violence.

Internal police emails released to parliament last month revealed senior police held concerns the decision to light the Sydney Opera House in the Israeli flag would inflame community tensions. “I didn’t envisage any concerns at the time when I found out the Opera House sails were going to be lit,” she said.

“There were no issues on the Sunday,” she said, adding she spoke to Minns “at least once” on the day of the protest but was unable to recall the conversation.
