NSW Police powers bolstered as Jack’s Law passes state parliament

NSW Police have been granted extra powers to tackle knife crime in the state after reform modelled under Queensland's Jack's Law passed parliament.The New South Wales government has passed new laws based on Queensland's Jack's Law which will allow state police to have stronger powers in tackling knife crime .

A senior police officer can make a declaration which allows police to scan people over the course of 12 hours, with an option to extend if required and the same criteria are met. The Act amends the Summary Offences Act 1988 and also includes a new offence into section 11F, prohibiting selling a knife to a child aged 16 or 17 without a reasonable excuse.

Picture: Jerad Williams Six of those were tragically murdered during a knife attack on a Westfield shopping centre at Bondi Junction, which sparked growing calls to review NSW's powers to tackle knife crime.
