Almost one in 10 motorists caught by NSW mobile phone detection cameras are using companies, which cannot identify the drivers, to avoid the penalties.

While drivers do not accrue demerit points when the penalty is referred to a company that cannot identify them, the state government charges the businesses five times the original fine and has collected close to $6 million in four months through the measure, the opposition says.

Unlike with speed cameras, the six fixed and two mobile trailer-mounted cameras aren't signposted. They were introduced to Sydney roads in December last year,The government began issuing fines for people caught by the cameras in March. The cameras use an algorithm to detect mobile phones, before sending those images to be verified by two people, who decide whether there is proof to issue the infringement.

More than $26 million worth of fines for mobile phone use were recorded last financial year, including the four months of the new mobile cameras. He said that, when police issued a penalty in person for the offence as opposed to when the cameras were used, there were no instances in which the driver was unable to be identified.

Fine the co. 10 times the penalty-that will stop most of them.

So the company doesn't have log books to trace who was behind the wheel? Fine the company and they will pass it on to the responsible driver. What an excuse am shocked!
