abc.net.au/news/byron-bay-short-term-rental-90-day-cap-intervention/101774446The Byron Shire Council has been blindsided by an 11th-hour decision by the NSW government which will stall controversial plans for a 90-day cap on short-term holiday letting in parts of the shire.
The council hoped a 90-day cap would alleviate the area's housing crisis by encouraging property investors to place their vacant properties back in the long-term rental market. After the state government's announcement, he said he would try to remain positive and trust the IPC to look carefully at the very complex issue."We've put our best step forward and just have to trust that the right decision will be made by that IPC.
"Council has jumped through every hoop that the planning department has said they had to go through," she said.In its announcement, the Department of Planning and Environment said the government had made the decision "in light of the 1,500 pieces of feedback received by the Council on the proposal … and the potentially significant economic impacts such a change could have on local businesses".
The lobby group previously argued the move would put 1,400 jobs at stake and cost the local economy $228 million.
With rentals being taken off the market and made into cash cow Airbnbs there’s no wonder people want to stay longer. Their housing has been stolen
The council or state government should not dictate what the property owner has to do with their investment.
Greed at it's worst. I hope none of my tax dollars are going to these 'investment properties'. 90 day cap. AlboMP fix it!
🤔 of course they would, have to protect investment properties of the well minority at the expense of the needy majority. 🤔 that’s right, there’s an election early in 2024, have to protect the summer holiday cash cow bonanza 🤦🏻♂️
Criminal - clearly the NSW government cares more about big business and corporations than Australian residents having a roof over their head. It should be the decision of the council and residents- stop selling our country you criminals! You have done enough damage!!
There is a broader context here once Byron Bay does this other councils facing the same housing shortages will be likely to introduce the same this may have the negative consequence of potential investors refusing to build further houses/accommodation making things worse.
Really not surprised they've done this as a stalling tactic. Wonder how many politicians have properties in the holiday rental system....
What is this the George Orwell Government that is interfering with Private Property owners 🤔
Acting against the property owners restricting their ability to commerce and rights of ownership. Plus overuling their local elected governance representatives and processes. Could owners form a union/society. Those with equal valuations trade deeds $1 every 90 days?
i wouldnt like to live around byron bay the next newcastle crime and general unpleasantry
renters do not pay rates Why is council siding with renters?
To all you complaining about private short stay accomm... and a long term rental crisis - have a chat to FW AlboMP about his fast track over 500K visas and his long term mass immigration scheme. Also Councils need to relax their local laws and allow more granny flat rentals eg.
. . NSW Liberal govt wants to ensure profits for the rich. This is NOT the same Liberal Party as the one 20 years ago. It has been hijacked by extreme capitalist greed dogma. Don't be loyal to a party that has changed its conscience. ONLY swing voters keep Aus great. . .
Are there stats on how many holiday property owners also use their property for their own holidays, and therefore wouldn’t put it on the private rental market anyway? Seems like the potential to drive down tourism while making almost no gains on private rental availability.
