The Herald's View: NSW COVID-19 plan lays out a cautious path to freedom

NSW has laid out its first detailed plan to get out of lockdown and, on balance, it is more cautious than many might have expected from the libertarian rhetoric that accompanied it.Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced on Thursday, NSW will start relaxing the lockdown on the Monday after the double-dose vaccination rate in the population over the age of 16 passes 70 per cent. As a share of the total NSW population that is a rate of 57 per cent.

One key point is that the plan does not specify a date for reopening apart from schools which will restart from October 25. Instead, the plan ties reopening to a vaccination target, which maintains the pressure on people to go out and get inoculated. The most reassuring aspect of the plan is that Ms Berejiklian is not promising that that Monday in the middle of October will be anything like the “freedom day” that ended lockdowns in US states such as Florida. Those jurisdictions gave in to pressure from business groups and citizens frustrated by lockdowns and scrapped all restrictions in one fell swoop.

One safeguard in the plan that should not be underestimated is the very tough approach it takes towards the unvaccinated. They will not receive any extra freedoms in October. A new system linking vaccine passports and QR sign-in codes will still bar them from restaurants and non-essential retail outlets and it will still be illegal to enter others’ homes.

NSW can only ease the lockdown partly after 85% full vaccination of aged 16. Reopening in October is too risky for all NSW people. No health means no economy. No Gladys and her cabinet means no health risk.

They can’t cope so they are using the get out plan

This will not end well

Kerry chant meant to say new world order , we will hear this more. The conspiracy theory may be true after all.

Cautious ? Yeah nah

Both nuts

Every other country in world has shown that going from 0 to 60% is easy, but going from 60 to 70 to 80% is much MUCH more difficult and slower

Blazing a trail 😂. That's rich...

So 3 weeks after we hit 70% we will surpass 80%. What of the so called “freedoms” then? Why wasn’t a full game plan out layed. The roadmap was more like half a map. Where is the guidance for every industry opening in full. Entertainment, Tourism and Hospitality? Where is the map?

It ambitious and wishful. The last thing it is is cautious.

New World order hey Kerry chant, you let that slip didn't you

They could just ask Joe Rogan for some advice.

“Some anxious citizens” think it’s too soon? You mean Dr Chant for example? Yes, 56% of population vaccinated, averaged over whole state IS too low. But, well, pubs, clubs, gyms & big retail need customers. Who cares that they might catch COVID at the venue? Donors, doncha know

A cautious path to apartheid.

‘Freedom’ 😵‍💫🤮 Get over using lazy, American thinking & language. Tabloid journalism.

At least they have a plan unlike Victoriastan

'The road map to freedom'. Have you ever heard anything more Orwellian? Free to see the virus rip without restrictions. (Oh & Chant said it shouldn't be less than 85%. But we know Gladys doesn't listen to the health advice). The Covid free states won't follow you off this cliff

Ask Singapore and Israel about freedom... the two most vaccinated countries and How they are dealing with delta

Interprets the Doherty Institute modelling wrong yet again and therefore is hardly 'cautious'. Dimwits.

Searched for an appointment yesterday. I got a Astra appointment 6 hours later. Why do Pfizer appointments take 2 months? Our PM had Pfizer. Does he think he is a king and us plebs should only get one choice? If only every Aussie knew how arrogant he really is. AustralianLabor

NSW authorities expected to unveil state's roadmap out of COVID-19 lockdownNSW residents will soon learn their path out of COVID-19 lockdown with the state government preparing to release its long-promised roadmap of freedoms on Thursday. I hope this doesn’t make things a lot worse. Melbourne's lockdown in 2020 was 112 days long. Oct 18th would be NSW's 113th day. Gladys wants to avoid being branded as the Premier with the longest lockdown. We all need to get out. We all need a cold beer with mates. But we'd be naïve to think this date wasn't political.

NSW records 1,405 COVID-19 cases as Premier reveals strategy to end lockdownPremier Gladys Berejiklian says the plan for NSW to exit lockdown will be staged and 'conditional' as the state records 1,405 infections and five deaths. How revolting she is. Get vaccines off other states and bloody skite about being ahead of other states re vaccinations. Stop picking a line out of the Doherty report and making it suit your statistics. Why even bother with these meaningless releases. Only thing we want to know is when will our freedom be returned. Its only be 18mths. Too long, far to long. ScottMorrisonMP These questions journalists are asking Gladys seem very banal , (lacking in originality, obvious and boring).
