Comment: It is critical that masks are mandated at the same time as any social distancing rules are relaxed, writes Professor Raina MacIntyre | KirbyInstitute

SARS-COV-2 is spread by respiratory aerosols, mostly in close contact, but in indoor venues these aerosols can accumulate over time. Think of cigarette smoke accumulating in a closed venue – it’s the same, but you cannot see these human emissions., and in the absence of good ventilation, these accumulate like clouds inside closed venues.

Data from around the world shows there is poor compliance with mask wearing unless mandated – and the idea that people can predict and plan for situations when they cannot physically distance is optimistic at best. Business owners must equally take responsibility for collaborating in a safety culture. A breach, as recently happened in the south-western Sydney cluster, makes contact tracing impossible, and increases the risk of silent epidemic growth. Contact tracing is feasible when the outbreaks are small, but when you have to trace thousands to hundreds of thousands of contacts at a day, even the best-resourced health system will not be able to keep up. SARS-COV-2 infections grow exponentially.

MJA_Editor KirbyInstitute Except that you’re supposed to do both anyway. Indoors without any doubt at all.

KirbyInstitute Dont mind wearing masks, question is how would we mandate it ? and what would be the punishment for deviation ?

KirbyInstitute Well that just makes too much sense for half the population!

Nurse who contracted COVID-19 at the centre of NSW investigation | Sky News AustraliaNew South Wales health officials are working to track down the source of two new locally acquired cases with a nurse who worked while infectious at St Vincent's Hospital at the centre of the investigation. \n\nNSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk have traded barbs over the new infections, after the new cases impeded the progress made by NSW towards the 28-day benchmark required by Queensland in order to open the border. \n\nDespite the two new cases, NSW has increased the number of people able to attend major horse racing events from 5,000 to 11,000.\n No wonder QLD wants to keep their borders closed to NSW And why is that ? Since nobody dies from covid19 and we know thode testing positive have no symptoms and aren't sick it's 100% pointless. Easy. Gold standard contact tracing. NSW has this in the bag. I’m surprised they are still trying TBH. I thought they would have this sorted by now.

Sydney nurse tests positive to COVID-19 as NSW records three new casesNSW has recorded just two new locally acquired cases of COVID-19, including a nurse who tested positive after working at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney while infectious. 'recorded' and 'reported', which is not the same as 'there are'. Should be more than ten times cases, everywhere in the community. Enjoy, such an incapable government. RubyPrincess The real question is, do we Australians believe in Science? One case can spread the virus to the entire nation. Numbers here will only make things worse. Having only few cases does not mean that we are safe. Caution must be taken all the time and every time. COVID19 Chinese ChinaVirus is here to stay. Stop resisting and have some chicken feet
