The benefits of hazard-reduction burning delivered mixed benefits in reducing bushfire risks during the record-breaking 2019-20 season | p_hannam

The benefits of hazard-reduction burning delivered mixed benefits in reducing bushfire risks during the record-breaking 2019-20 season, with extreme weather conditions overwhelming any gains.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the government had increased spending by $45 million to bolster resources. The report noted: "It is likely that we will see extreme fire conditions again when the risk factors combine in the right way. Extreme fires and fire seasons are likely to become more frequent.

However, in three other cases, the Gospers Mountain, Bees Nest and South Coast complex fires, previous recent fires had only limited effects on the severity of last season's fires. "While past fire can help to reduce severity, it does not do this consistently, and areas can burn at high or severe levels despite recent fire," the report found."Hazard reduction isn't the only solution, but it's certainly part of the solution," he said.
