In the very brief upper house inquiry, the questions I have heard follow the same predictable tactic of describing the exceptional event as the reason for the law in its generality. What happens if there is incest does not give reason for the vast majority of occasions where there is not. Exceptional horrible events happen during life but this legislation is not limited to exceptional events.
The key issue is that we must recognise that a responsibility and a right are different, not mutual. You have a responsibility to look after a baby after they are born. It is not a right that you can do as you wish with that person before they are born, as inconvenient at times as that may be. The day before they are born you have the same responsibility to look after that child, not a right.
