It is simply a "recipe for stupidity," for Nationals Leader Michael McCormack to leave Senator Matt Canavan languishing on the backbench, following his resignation from cabinet on Monday, says Sky News contributor Stephen Conroy. A spill for the leadership was called on Tuesday morning after Bridget McKenzie’s resignation as deputy leader created a vacuum for Barnaby Joyce to challenge for the top job.

Nationals Cabinet Minister Matt Canavan announced his resignation from the government frontbench on Monday, in order to support his colleague Barnaby Joyce's bid to become National Party leader. "It will only take a few stumbles from Michael McCormack and the National Party leadership will be in play again," Mr Conroy told Sky News host Peta Credlin. "You cannot have Matt Canavan sitting on the backbench, that is a recipe for stupidity," he said.

Why would he reward a knife man?

HEY POLLIES JUST GET ON WITH RUNNING THE COUNTRY . NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE BULLCRAP GOING ON IN CANBERRA.. SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT..

mattjcan M_McCormackMP ScottMorrisonMP FAKE News Stephen Conroy is labor who attacked the free press Canavan re-signed temporarily and has only been on the back bench one day Julia Gillard's henchman Stephen Conroy attacks freedom of the press

McCormack is too weak to make the hard calls.

margmopp Would be nice if the best person for the job was appointed to the job and not appointed for loyalty to the leader

Smartest thing he's ever done.

The bloke goosed himself while humping Bahnahbee's leg

The hate media is out to get M_McCormackMP Just insanity on right now. Expect it to get worse and more insane as the week rolls on. Just ignore the fact Barnaby has huge black clouds hanging over him and Canavan has a huge scandal right now.

There will be more spills. The Nats current leadership lost them a ton of votes at the last election. If they had any self respect they’d stand down.

A great recipe would through this tosser to the dogs 💩

Oh this is comical. mattjcan would have to be the dumbest and most talentless in a very shallow pool of LNP hacks. A man so clever he orchestrated his own downfall.

Matt Canavan is a future leader that understands this country’s needs and recognises the hardships of the agriculture and mining sectors and supports them tirelessly. The LiberalAus party need to the fix this ASAP and get him on the front bench! Future PM material!

won't be a nats party after next election..whatsisname can sink back into obscurity

He made his bed. Hang with the crows as the saying goes

A 'recipe for stupidity.' I think the Nationals cooked that cake a long time ago

He is the one who was disloyal to the leader and backed Joyce. Surely consequences are expected for such things? Maybe not in the ethics-free Murdocracy. BoycottMurdoch

Conroy sold his arse.

Canavan should lead if Barnaby cannot

Matt Canavan is an entire recipe book of stupidity.

Anything involving Canavan is a 'recipe for stupidity'.

Canavan couldn't pick a winner to save himself, everybody knew McWhatshisname was a winner.

Canavan is a grub. If he doesn’t pay a price for disloyalty, he’ll do it again and again and again..

Canavan Ground Work Continues!

mattjcan choose his fate How can he and Barnaby_Joyce remain The_Nationals? They bought on a fight that wasn’t required and lost They’ll have to depart Coalition in deep 💩 💩

A week is a long time in politics There are now mass defections to One Nation. The Night of the Long Knives in the Nationals has just been postponed.

No one forced him to resign!! Get real..

🤣Conroy

Stephen Conroy thinks talent equates to the ability to win elects for the LNP not for policy. That says a lot about Sky News and the fact that they can't find any other reason.

Corrupt coal man. No thanks

Oh, yes, we all remember Stephen Conroy. Say no more.

All he ever does is spruik for coal anyway. He can take his oil

It is Karma Baby, says everyone else.

Got what he deserved... what a prat.

Disarray

Perhaps he shouldn’t have resigned then?

Joyce and Canavan 'being wasted on the back bench' | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny says there has been another day of “leadership shenanigans” in Australian politics, which has resulted in two of the Nationals’ “best performers” being “wasted” on the back bench. \n\nMichael McCormack survived a leadership challenge by Barnaby Joyce, which was ultimately an unsuccessful campaign to take back his old job. \n\nA spill for the leadership was called on Tuesday morning after Bridget McKenzie’s resignation as deputy leader created a vacuum for Mr Joyce to challenge for the top job. \n\nNationals Cabinet Minister Matt Canavan announced his resignation from the government frontbench on Monday, in order to support his colleague Barnaby Joyce's bid to become National Party leader.\n\nMr Kenny said in the aftermath of the leadership spill, Mr McCormack should “not only have asked Canavan to continue on as resources minister, he should have promoted Joyce too”. \n\nMr Kenny said both Canavan and Joyce are two of the Nationals' “best performers” and it is unwise for Mr McCormack to ‘waste’ the two of them on the back bench. \n\n“This is not good for the Nationals, not good for the government, not good for the country and certainly not good for Scott Morrison,” he said. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia \n They chose their current positions.
