As residents from South Coast towns began making their way home, the death toll from the bushfires climbed to 20 with the discovery of a man's body on a property near Narooma.

"We are not out of the woods yet, but conditions have eased over all the fire grounds. It has given us the opportunity to get on the front foot rather than just defensive fire fighting," he said.

Police believe the body is that of a 71-year-old man who has been missing since December 31, 2019. He is yet to be formally identified.The death toll for the state is now at 20 people, eight of whom have died along the South Coast since December 30.one person south of Bombala and another person west of Bodalla.

More than 449 homes along the South Coast have been destroyed since January 1, but the RFS expects hundreds more homes will be confirmed lost in coming days, as assessment teams reach the hardest-hit towns. Nationally, more than 1800 homes have been destroyed.photographer Dallas Kilponen was returning from the Sydney to Hobart race when strong northerly winds forced their boat, the Kialoa II, to shelter in Twofold Bay in Eden.

"Early indications show Friday won't be as strong as last Saturday," he said. "But there is still significant potential for a significant [fire] day."
