The chairman of Britain's foreign affairs committee says China's decision to issue a list of the grievances it has with Australia is "an extremely aggressive act" and could oblige the UK to follow Australia's lead.
Tugendhat said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson would be "extremely aware" of the list and that he expected the UK and Australia to stand "shoulder to shoulder in standing up for democracy". He urged China's President Xi Jinping to change course or it would put China's future economic prosperity at risk."It's about time that he realised that free countries are not here to be bullied and not here to be pushed around," Tugendhat said.
The comments from Tugendhat, a Conservative MP who is not a member of the Inter Parliamentary Alliance on China, could set off another round of diplomatic wrangling between business, looking to trade out of a deep recession, and the British government.
