The Australian Formula 1 driver announced 'bittersweet news' he will exit from his McLaren team at the end of this season to make way for another fellow Aussie but the brutal sacking will be softened with a massive payout.

The eight-time Grand Prix winner took to Instagram on Thursday to confirm speculation he will vacate his seat to likely make way for fellow Aussie star Oscar Piastri.

He revealed there had been"a lot of discussions" from both sides and subtly pointed to McLaren as the main party who wanted to"make a change". Ricciardo provided the Woking-based team with its first race win in almost a decade when he won the 2021 Monza GP in Italy. "I'll be announcing my own future plans in due course but regardless of what this next chapter brings, I have no regrets and am proud of the effort and work I gave McLaren, especially the win in Monza, last season," he added.

He has endured a tough 2022 season languishing down 12th in the drivers standings with 19 championship points while Norris has managed to better deal with the lower than expected performance of the car sitting in seventh with 76 points. The saga started weeks ago when the Alpine F1 team announced Piastri would be promoted from the F2 category into the main series next season.

Greatest overrated F1 driver

That’s a nice Settlement

Wouldn’t mind a $22M payout for being a dud. I wonder what my boss will pay me if I perform at a lower standard than my junior colleagues on far less money…

He is stuck as if he just sits back and enjoys the money he will probably not get back into F1 and if he finds a new gig most of the payout will probably go away.
