Tasmania has the worst year 12 attainment rate of all states but these students are keen to see their schooling through.

It's year 10 taster day at Claremont College in Hobart's northern suburbs and Lachlan Blackwell is keen to find out more about sports science and an outdoor education course.Recent data from the Productivity Commission shows fewer than 60 per cent of Tasmanian teens complete year 12Schools are coming up with innovative ways to encourage young people to stay on

The state also has the worst attainment rate — keeping students at school till year 12 — of any state or territory. Peter Underwood Centre for Education Attainment director Natalie Brown said there were many reasons some young Tasmanians did not go on to years 11 and 12, including the outdated belief that college was for people who wanted to attend university.Professor Brown added: "There are some families who may not see the value in years 11 and 12. If there's a history of unemployment or underemployment there's not encouragement for students to go on because that value may not be there.

There was a rise from about 74 per cent in 2015 to more than 80 per cent in 2019, which was better than the national average. An initiative called the Derwent Collective has seen Claremont College partner with the region's feeder schools to help break down barriers to education.

Tamil mum’s 12 treacherous days at sea in search of a safe havenAlmost 100 women and children were crammed onto a rickety fishing boat which broke down nine days into the journey to Australia. Now Priya waits for her sick daughter to get better in a Perth hospital as the court battle over deportation continues. India isn’t a safe haven This gov't will cheerfully imprison 2 Australian-born children 'to send a mesage' to those willing to help refugees escape horrors in their homelands. They have been found not to be refugees. So they'll need to meet another category for immigration. Wrong strategy, should have gone for sponsorship. Surely the Biloela locals could have found an employment sponsor?

Here's why snow chasers leave Brisbane out in the coldEven Australia's major cold snap this week may not be enough for the city to improve on its lousy record when it comes to seeing snowflakes. When I was a kid all I wanted was for it to snow in Brisbane. Now I refuse to get out of bed until it’s double figures. Which *looks at weather* won’t be today. I’ll try again tomorrow. Or September. You have not noted the critical role of altitude in snowfall. Snow at sea level is rare anywhere in Australia let alone the subtropics. Toowoomba, the Downs and the Granite Belt have altitude. Brisbane does not. The picture of the snowy house could be hail. Having said that, I have seen a snowcloud from the Brisbane suburbs back in the 90s, sitting on Mt Glorious.
