Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has told Indigenous leaders there is enough time to win Australians’ support for the Voice referendum if it is held within next 20 months | LisaVisentin

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed the Voice to parliament referendum will be held in the next financial year, telling Indigenous leaders there is “not a day to waste” as they prepare the strategy for a Yes vote.set up to shape the referendum plan, Albanese said he had not settled on a date for the national vote but it would be some time during a year-long window after July next year.

“If we don’t have a referendum, then by definition it won’t succeed. And, if not now, when? And if not under this government, which government is going to have the guts to do it?” he said. He said the draft constitutional amendment to establish the Voice, which he proposed at the Garma Indigenous festival in July, was not final because “we want people to have input and if people have got a little bit of a better idea, then that’s fine as well”.

LisaVisentin The constitution is a rule book for governing. It serves all Australians equally. Singling out any group, no matter how well meaning, is repugnant. We have the same voice to parliament… one vote, one value. With the details hidden until after the vote, you’d be nuts to vote yes.

LisaVisentin Lidia Thorpe has made voting yes almost impossible. Also, where are the details! Don’t take the Australian people for mugs. We know we have one of the most stable democracies in the world. We don’t want that stability to change. voicetoparliament
