Researchers have confirmed a surprising finding about animal bites in tropical north Queensland.

It does not matter if you get bitten by a crocodile or a wallaby in tropical north Queensland, as long as you do one crucial thing, new research has confirmed.

Domestic dogs and cats made up the second and third spots on the list respectively, and would top it in other parts of the country where contact with venomous snakes is less common. But they actually found nothing out of the ordinary, which Dr Hanson said showed a key factor in all bite cases in the region.

Cairns Zoo zookeeper Dan Kemp introduces study authors Dr Josh Hanson and Dr Simon Smith to a python. That was illustrated, he said, by the fact that it was not an exotic animal responsible for the most infections per bite, but domestic house cats. Dr Hanson said the results of the research showed not only how important immediate medical care was for infection control after an animal bite, but also how lucky we are in Australia to have access to such care even in remote parts of the country.
