The Northern Territory Police Association is concerned about the use of private security staff, instead of trained police officers, to handle violent public order situations. He said many aggressors know the Darwin CBD security guards employed by Territory Protective Services, known as the "blue shirts", have limited powers. Shoe shop manager Leah Bennett said she still has an ongoing knee injury from being bashed recently after closing up for the day.She and several other Darwin business people have now installed remote controlled automatic front door locks.But she said it was the private security guards the NT government is funding who gave her a bigger sense of safety.

"I have to stop them outside my door punching each other and abusing each other, screaming at the top of their voices and vomiting and sh***ing," she said. NT Chief Minister Natasha Fyles has rejected the Police Association's underfunding and public safety criticisms.
