Chloe Zhao cast real-life van-dwelling grey nomads in her film, which won Best Picture and Best Director at this week's Golden Globes. She talked to ABC about her unusual approach to drama, and her forthcoming Marvel blockbuster.

– the hotly tipped Oscars favourite from writer-director Chloe Zhao – where Fern , a 60-something widow who has packed up and driven away from her old life in Nevada, arrives in Quartzsite, Arizona for the annual gathering of RV dwellers known as the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous.

The gathering is real – one of many elements originally depicted in journalist Jessica Bruder's 2017 non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. This approach is hardly novel – think of the factory worker Lamberto Maggiorani from Bicycle Thieves , just one of the many faces who galvanised Italian neorealism – but the industry is still struggling to agree on suitable terms. In recent years, Tangerine director Sean Baker has used the term "first-timers"; Clint Eastwood referred to his leads in The 15:17 to Paris as "real-life heroes"; and filmmaker Valerie Massadian calls her actors "real people".

Together, the actor and the Beijing-born filmmaker have crafted a sweeping melodrama anchored in both the lived experiences documented in Bruder's book and the evocative, almost mythic landscapes of the American West. Nomadland sees Zhao evolve her practice, working for the first time with professional actors and leaning deeper into fiction.
