Peter Doherty won the Nobel prize in medicine for his work on the immune system. 'I'm a disease and death guy,' is how he explains it to the lay person.

"I think the steps announced by the Prime Minister and the premiers will dampen this down. I would expect to see the curve flatten in the next couple of weeks, see it start to come down," he says.

Professor Doherty cites the example of the effectiveness of such measures in US state of Washington. It was the site of the first big outbreak of COVID-19 in America. On government support for urgent new research, he says: "Federal and state governments are doing pretty much everything asked of them to drive this research, clinical and diagnostic effort forward."

"We are moving faster on this than on anything in human history. One vaccine in the US is already on trial, it's already gone into people's arms, and the University of Queensland vaccine is being progressed here and with CSIRO," he said. Expert opinion commonly specifies a 12 to 18-month wait for an effective vaccine to be widely available. "I'm hopeful that we in the global community could be quicker, but that might just be my optimism."

This is dangerous speculation by someone who has not done the calculations. Every indication is that virtually everyone in the world will need to practice social distancing for much longer than expected, perhaps months. See here from a US perspective:

Why would you leave this kind of information behind a paywall?

HumanHeadline In Australia, could be. It's controllable at the moment. As long as we don't import it from other countries or remove measures too early.

Of course it will. Most countries in lockdown or heading that way so it’s pretty obvious that it’ll flatten. You don’t need a Nobel prize winner to tell you that.

Pubs closing caused more outrage than the Parliament shutdown — and that's frighteningWorkers lucky enough still to have a job and be able to work from home are on an exponential learning curve — but not our politicians, writes Annabel Crabb. Well that just shows where the majority of Australians' priorities are. God help us if there ever is a war. Only frightening to people who feel dependence on government.
