Up to 20 Australians die each year from anaphylaxis. A new standard for treatment now aims to raise awareness of how best to recognise and treat severe allergic reactions allergies anaphylaxis health

When Livia Sullivan’s eldest daughter Sofia had her first bottle of formula milk, she developed an immediate rash. The six-month-old’s body then became pale and floppy, and Mrs Sullivan called an ambulance.

Now nine-years-old, it has been determined Sofia has anaphylaxis to dairy and egg. Her younger sister Amelia also has anaphylaxis, but to peanuts, cashews and pistachios. A new standard for treatment of acute anaphylaxis, released by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care on Wednesday, aims to raise awareness of how best to recognise and treat severe allergic reactions in settings including hospitals, ambulance call-outs and at GPs.

Dr Preeti Joshi, co-chair of the National Allergy Strategy and a staff specialist at Sydney’s Westmead Children’s Hospital, said, while it was not recommended for young children, it was generally best to allow a patient to keep their adrenaline with them.“The evidence is the sooner you can recognise and treat anaphylaxis the better,” she said, adding that children from the age of 12 should be taught to recognise the signs of a reaction and self-administer adrenaline.
