Using his skills as an electrician and carpenter, Mr Hewitt worked alongside Indigenous men to build the store at Yulara, the townsite near Uluru, in the 1970s.
Mr Hewitt said often, after a day's work, the men would knock off and climb the rock to enjoy the view.Mr Hewitt believed the discussion around the closure of the climb is not accurate. "But we have to make sure … that it does accurately reflect the views of the Aboriginal traditional owners, wherever they may be."

I’d be emabarrased if I was apart of those crowds. 👎👎
The resort will be bankrupt in 6 mths ,and they will be screaming for taxpayers to give them money .
Why are people so indignant about not being able to climb it? I just don’t get it. Like children who are told they can’t have something, they just want it more?
Shut it down but also close the entire area. Delete it off tourist destinations and memorabilia. No need to fund Aboriginal projects in the area if no ones visiting so it's a win win. Same goes with community projects, they are spiritual, they don't need our money.
👍
All of nature belongs to all humans . Anything else is ridiculous .
It’s the beginning of banning other out door areas of nature that belong to all. First It’s sacred land 🙄then it’s for climate change to preserve the planet . Pretty soon will need a license to go into the country & only on certain days .You think I’m joking but I’m not .
People will still climb Uluru
Long overdue.
Good. Nobody should be allowed entry to Indigenous property without permission.
There really are some very ignorant individuals here
Yeah, its not like the rest of us can just stop people from coming on to our land anytime they want.
I was born here what about my native title!
Good.
I believe Native Title is Australian Common Law. Aboriginal Australians are entitled to discuss, consider and debate such matters that are of concern to themselves and their communities. And should be supported while doing so.
Close the Sydney harbour bridge to indigenous people, seems fair.
Not in 1972, or 1979, or 1986, is the ABC rewriting history again? i mean there are now demanding secular fart-wa's.
...and so the race to divide Australians continues unabated.
They gather still, the clouds of Taranaki, his children’s children wearing the white plume - I don’t remember *anyone* showing any offence at climbing Mt Taranaki, and I spent many years near its base.
Let's just shut down the great ocean road 😀😀
What an idiotic society we are. Just shut the country down and be done with nature expeditions. Take virtual tour instead . Ohhhh then they'll be royalty claims to that.
Sickening.
