Prospective home owners are often lured to regional areas, but some who have moved say it comes with hidden costs

Beck Carter and her family moved to Canowindra for her husband's work, after having to sell their home in Sydney.Beck Carter and her family moved to Canowindra for her husband's work, after having to sell their home in Sydney.Beck Carter and her family left Bligh Park, near Windsor in Sydney’s west, in 2022. The family-of-three moved to Canowindra, about 60km from the regional city of Orange, for her husband’s work.

Carter’s husband, who works in the stock feed industry, made the 500km round trip to Sydney to bring his mother to Canowindra to help.and has been “very intentional” about meeting new people. But she says she has had moments she wished she could go back to the city to be close to family, medical services and support structures.

“You have to be prepared to play a long game,” she said. “You’re not just going to move and settle. We’re two years in and we’re still finding our footing, still figuring things out … my husband doesn’t have a GP. You’re not going to come out to a regional area and just live your life like you did in the city.”Many people who move from city to country have a similar experience, says demographer Dr Liz Allen.

Allan says that encouraging people to move regionally without first addressing housing policy will only exacerbate the problem. “Regional cities in the ‘sweet spot’ — offering commuting options to a capital city, a lifestyle dividend, and affordable housing — will likely experience stronger demand than they did pre-covid,” Lawless says.
